Abstract

Osteosarcoma is a rare malignancy of the head and neck region. Surgical excision with wide margin remains the gold standard of treatment. Early and aggressive surgical intervention coupled with chemotherapy has been shown to increase the median overall survival rate of the patient.

We present five cases of osteosarcoma of the maxilla seen at National University of Malaysia Hospital within a five-year period (1999-2004). None of the five patients were free from disease at the time of this report. Late presentation or defaulted treatment reduced their chance of cure. The aim of this paper is to share our experience in the management of osteosarcoma of the maxilla.
